As I have become more familiar with educational technology I have found different ways in which to integrate technology into the curriculum I am teaching.
Currently, I am teaching Physical Education and Health to grade 7s and thoroughly enjoying the experience. I have found challenges with the integration of technology into the traditional PE model, so for that reason I have decided to approach the curriculum in somewhat of an unconventional way.
My intention is for my seventh grade students to create a "Health Portfolio". The idea being that they make a collection of different works to do with Physical Education. This consists of videos, blogs and other activities that are linked to promoting a healthy lifestyle, but most importantly, the aim is to address the student's interests and finding a way to link these interests to class, curriculum standards, benchmarks and physical activity.
An example of this would be a student who holds a passion for photography could combine this with picture specific targets to be photographed in combination with an orienteering unit. This could take place throughout a park or a city (age dependent), where by looking for the images to capture they are getting a tremendous amount of exercise by hiking around and finding what they are looking for as a direct result of the skills and standards being assessed in the orienteering unit. Their site is their venue to showcase these photos and for visitors to gain an insight to how fitness can be fun and incorporated into almost anything you like to do!
The site contains "how to video" tutorials so that students can see how to do things, like create a website or embed video or pictures that they like into their e-portfolios.
They also have a link to their classmates' sites so they can see, share and compare other creative endeavors that their peers are creating.
Parents are also able to access the sites and see the wonderful things that their children are creating. (This aspect is password protected in order to ensure the safety of my students as this is school policy)
And all the while maintaining a clear message about the importance of physical health and creating a life-long love of physical activity!
