Where I Started, Where I Am, What The Future Holds...

Several years back now I was looking to continue on my journey as a life-long learner and pursue an MA degree. I actually found it very difficult to find anything that appealed to my ideals of what a program should be. Embarking on such an endeavor was and still is something that needs total commitment on my part in order to find success. I had actually found a program that was convenient, well priced and a bit of what I was looking for. In the end, the program did not receive the support and enrollment that it needed to continue and that was the sign needed to look beyond and search out something better suited to my needs. By complete chance I came across the Master of Arts in Education program from Michigan State University. At that moment in time, I had the feeling that I had plateaued with my knowledge and capabilities professionally. Some of these limitations were based on account of my circumstance and the “Great Firewall” living in China while others were within my control and could be remedied by seeking out further professional . After reading what the program entailed and the flexibility of it all, everything seemed to come together and accommodate all my needs and exceed my desires from a Masters program.
The decision to apply for the program was a simple one in that all my professional goals were met. At the time I was and still am looking for more responsibility in my roles within the education system such as department head, athletics director or eventually as an administrator. As a teacher there was the opportunity to expand my abilities to differentiate with an increased awareness of educational resources available out there through classes and collaboration with my peers. Having two areas of focus was an incredible opportunity and one that served all of my professional aspirations.
This big adventure started three years ago and my overall goals have continued to stand true to this point. What has changed is the depth in which I have a better understanding of the impact this program has had on me professionally and personally. My expectations have been exceeded with the professional growth I have experienced and been a part of. My knowledge base and areas of expertise are such now that I am leading teams, developing programs and becoming a greater contributor to my school environment. Initially, the program was a way to discover the means to my professional growth. As I approach the end of the program, I am able to step back to reflect upon this growth and how it has invigorated my professional aspirations. Whereas before I had the desire, now I have the tools, the savvy and resources to attain those initial goals of becoming a better teacher, collaborator and resource for students and colleagues alike.
