The use of Digital Badges
Digital badging is a way to address the cognitive and affective learning domains of various learners that can be integrated into learning units, general curriculum or offered as Choice and Challenge to engage individuals that are looking to dive deeper into their learning and any other number of areas of interest.
Several types of digital assessments and/or assignments can be utilized in order to earn and award badges. These various tasks can be digitally archived in an e-portfolio, where students will be able to add as much or as little as they want to challenge. The idea of digital badging is to nurture the inquiry mindset of ALL learners and empower them to have agency in their own learning, while being recognized for their achievements. Making the shift from extrinsically motivated learners initially, but as the evidence suggests, shifting along the continuum to providing opportunities for autonomy leading to an intrinsically driven learner.
